Podimo opens the doors: New free listening experience in Germany to welcome more listeners and creators
Berlin [22 May 2025] – Podimo, the European podcast and audiobook subscription service, introduces a new free listening experience in Germany—a curated offering designed to lower the barrier for new listeners, help creators expand their reach, and drive long-term growth for the subscription business. The move builds on Podimo’s milestone of surpassing 1 million paying subscribers globally, and marks a strategic evolution that complements its core Premium model.
Listeners in Germany can now access a curated selection of new and existing Podimo podcasts for free, including favorites Zeichen des Todes, Bad Ass Reality, and Ein Mensch verschwindet, as well as a slate of new shows launching throughout the year—starting with Zycho, a new show from Berlin-based comedian Xhem, which debuts today. The free experience is supported by ads and recommendations. Creators benefit from increased visibility, audience growth, and compensation through a combination of talent fees and affiliate revenue—ensuring their work continues to be valued as the platform expands.
“Podimo remains a subscription-first platform, and that’s not changing. Free is an entry point, but Premium is the full experience” said Morten Strunge, CEO and Founder of Podimo. “But to continue growing sustainably, we also need to meet listeners where they are. In Germany, we know that over 70% of podcast listeners are willing to pay—especially for high-quality, localized content—but many still begin their audio journey through free access. This is an add-on, not a replacement. It’s our way of inviting them in, showing the value, and ultimately converting them to Premium." said Strunge.
While the free experience is designed to broaden access and boosts creator reach, Premium members still enjoy the full 'only on Podimo' experience — including unlimited access to exclusive shows, early releases, bonus content, audiobooks, and interactive community features.
“Germany is one of Podimo’s most engaged markets,” said Friedhelm Tauber, Country Manager for Germany. “This new free offering is about reaching new audiences and working closely with creators to grow together. We’re equipping them with the tools to expand their reach, deepen connections with listeners, and strengthen their brand across both free and paid tiers. It’s how we stay committed to high-quality storytelling—while welcoming millions more listeners eager to discover our content.”
Now listeners in Germany have two clear ways to experience Podimo. They can start by exploring a curated range of top shows for free when they download the app or on web player, then upgrade to Premium when they’re ready to dive deeper into the stories and voices they love. Whether through free discovery or premium immersion, Podimo continues to connect creators and audiences in a model built to last.

Podimo Surpasses 1 Million Paying Subscribers in its First Five Years
Copenhagen, Denmark - 24. February, 2025 - Podimo has reached 1 million paying subscribers globally. This milestone reflects the company’s dedication to supporting local podcast creators, helping them find new listeners and offering the best monetization opportunity in our markets, while in turn providing listeners with access and connection to the most important local stories and voices of the day.
Founded in Denmark in 2019, Podimo has since expanded to six markets in Europe and across Latin America, and continues to show substantial growth across all the markets in which it operates. This early milestone has been achieved through Podimo’s deep understanding of local markets along with the contributions of its strategic acquisitions including Dag en Nacht Media, Tonny Media, and PodAds. Podimo has already become profitable in three of its markets, and expects to grow dramatically by the end of 2025.
One of the key drivers behind Podimo’s success has been its ability to curate and deliver content tailored to the unique tastes and preferences of each region’s listeners. “Reaching 1 million paying subscribers is a massive achievement from our humble beginnings in Denmark, and a testament to our model and strategy of investing in local content and building strong relationships with local creators. By bringing this approach to many markets, we have cemented ourselves as a global player,” said Morten Strunge, CEO and Founder of Podimo. “Many thought podcast subscription was a niche thing. It’s not. 1 million is just the tip of the iceberg, and it proves that the ceiling for this business is incredibly high when we can effectively showcase the right content to the right audience,” Strunge added.
Beyond the Nordics, Podimo is seeing significant momentum in regions like the Netherlands, which launched only 2.5 years ago and is already profitable. “Our growth goes well beyond the Nordics. The majority of our subscribers come from our other markets, where we’re generating 10-15x more revenue per listener than advertising and putting that directly back into creators’ pockets. This is about more than just business—it’s about sharing great content with people and making sure creators get the support they deserve,” said Strunge.
Over the past two years, Podimo has been investing heavily in its product, with significant upgrades to the user interface, resulting in a 45% increase in overall listening on the platform in 2024. Subscribers enjoy 20 hours of content a month, across 3-4 exclusive shows per week. This has been driven by improvements in our personalized recommendations and interactive community features including comments, in-show emojis, polls and fan profiles.
As Podimo continues its upward trajectory, the company remains focused on innovation and content quality. Podimo’s future includes further investment in local talent along with in-depth narrative formats, deeper integration of product features, and expansion into new markets. “Our mission is to become the go-to destination for spoken audio entertainment and preferred partner for creators, and we’re confident that we’ll continue to reach new heights as we evolve.”

We produce more of our shows in video than ever before, but we want to dive further into what visual engagement could mean for formats like True Crime or single host shows, where filming the recording session might not add value for the listener, but there are other ways to enhance the listening experience."

The acquisition creates new opportunities for creators and businesses that can now increase their earnings through multiple revenue streams and expand their audience. Podads will continue to operate independently under CEO and Co-Founder Anne-Kathrine Pommergaard.
“The market for podcast advertising is growing, but we see even greater commercial potential that goes hand in hand with the growth of Podimo's subscription model. With the acquisition of Podads, we can jointly increase the efficiency of podcast advertising in Denmark and attract more and larger advertisers to the medium,” explains Podimo co-founder and CEO, Morten Strunge. “In combination with Podimo's subscription model, we can now offer creators more opportunities for revenue and audience growth, which ultimately leads to better content for listeners.”

Podimo will continue to focus on its subscription-based business as before, providing exclusive, ad-free content to its subscribers.

In this global leadership role, Brown will spearhead the company’s end-to-end content strategy across its subscription platform and newly launched Studios division, overseeing the production and global rollout of original IP across podcasts, video, and digital formats. Studios will create new revenue streams for creators, publishers, and talent through licensing, brand partnerships, live events, and international expansion. Podimo acquisitions Podads, Tonny Media, and Dag en Nacht Media will now operate under the Podimo Studios umbrella.
Brown, a highly respected leader in the global film and television industry, brings a proven track record in building premium content businesses and scaling creative operations across international markets. As former Head of Amazon Studios, Europe, she scaled the company’s regional presence from a one-person startup in the UK across 7 markets, delivering some of Prime Videos biggest global hits, including Clarkson’s Farm, The Rig, the LOL: Last One Laughing and All or Nothing franchise. Previously, Brown held senior roles in content distribution at Fremantle, Shine Group, and BBC Worldwide. In her new role, Brown joins Podimo’s leadership team, and will be based in London.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Podimo at such an exciting time,” says Georgia Brown. “The creator economy is experiencing rapid, transformative growth, reshaping how stories are told, shared, and monetised. The future of content lies in convergence between the world of traditional entertainment and the dynamic, ever-evolving creator landscape. Podimo is uniquely positioned to empower creators to grow into media entrepreneurs, building sustainable businesses, and scaling their impact through premium, IP-led storytelling.”
Brown was brought on by Podimo’s outgoing Chief Content Officer Sachin Doshi, who will step down from his role in September and take a position on Podimo’s board, while continuing to advise on the company’s expanding Studios and platform strategies.
“Podimo was built on strengthening relationships between creators and their audiences, helping them earn more and own their value,” says Founder and CEO Morten Strunge. “Under Georgia’s creative leadership and backed by Podimo’s strong tech and product foundation, we are positioning ourselves at the forefront of premium storytelling and platform innovation. We are grateful to Sachin for building such a strong foundation and are looking forward to continuing to work together in his new capacity.”
Founded in Denmark in 2019, Podimo has built a strong foundation in local-language spoken audio entertainment, recently surpassing 1 million paying subscribers.

"2024 saw spoken audio entertainment reach new heights of influence globally,” says Podimo Chief Content Officer Sachin Doshi, “as we look to 2025, we see a stronger willingness to pay for quality local language content, and in multiple markets we’re already generating more revenue for podcasters than the entire local advertising business. Our goal is to make that a reality everywhere. Creators will continue to have differing goals, and our mission is to support them where they’re at, whether it’s helping them earn more, or developing their audience reach. Finally, the future of audio is audio, but many audio formats lend themselves to a richer experience through visual engagement, at the listener’s discretion. We produce more of our shows in video than ever before, but we want to dive further into what visual engagement could mean for formats like True Crime or single host shows, where filming the recording session might not add value for the listener, but there are other ways to enhance the listening experience."

Podimo acquires Podads to strengthen podcast monetization and expand hybrid podcast subscription and ad-supported model
Copenhagen, Denmark – October 3, 2024 – Podimo acquires Podads, one of Denmark's leading podcast agencies and advertising platforms, with an aim to create better growth opportunities for podcasts and bolster podcast advertising in the market.
"We are very excited to become a part of the Podimo family and look forward to the collaboration ahead of us,” said CEO and Co-Founder Anne-Kathrine Pommergaard, “together, we can create a unique platform and deliver even more quality content to Danish advertisers. It’s a natural step for Podads to partner with Podimo so that we can continue our growth journey and open up even more exciting opportunities in the commercial podcast market."
Podimo will continue to focus on its subscription-based business as before, providing exclusive, ad-free content to its subscribers. This new partnership with Podads follows the company’s successful expansion in the Netherlands with the acquisitions of Dutch production companies Dag en Nacht and Tonny Media, and is part of the company’s wider strategy to boost the podcasting ecosystem through a hybrid subscription and ad-supported model.
To further strengthen this hybrid model, Podimo recently hired former Head of Creators at Instagram Whitney Rosenthal as Podimo’s Directors of Creator Platforms, and Ida Adler-Olsen as Head of Content Research, underscoring Podimo’s commitment to empowering creators with the tools and data they need to succeed.
