Así es el oyente de podcasts en América Latina
Apr 6, 2021
Each time, the number of Spaniards who decide to join the podcast and audiobooks craze increases, an industry that continues to grow all over the world. Thus, currently, podcasts generate revenue of 1.3 billion dollars, an amount that is estimated to multiply six times, reaching 8 billion dollars by 2030. Likewise, the consumption of audiobooks is not left behind, and it is estimated that their revenue will quadruple by 2030, rising from 5 billion to 20 billion dollars.
And every day, almost 20,000 new podcasts are published worldwide, a number that continues to increase month by month to the point that 23% of the podcasts launched this year already have at least 10 episodes. However, not everything is good news, and practically 1 in 3 podcasts dies during its first year of broadcasting, with only one episode.
“It has barely been six months since we launched the Podimo app in Spain, and we are pleasantly surprised by the high level of adoption that paid podcasts are having in our country. As indicated in the infographic, we have a very high level of engagement from podcast listeners who are dedicating an average of 15 hours per month to listening to podcasts and audiobooks,” declares Javier Celaya, general director of Podimo for Spain and Latin America.
Spaniards fall in love with podcasts
Nowadays, a year after the podcast boom emerged due to the pandemic and the consequent lockdown, this leisure product has become yet another alternative for Spaniards when enjoying their leisure time. And while there are many reasons to enjoy a podcast, when it comes to defining which is the main one, Spaniards highlight the possibility of listening to content whenever they want (30%). In second place is that it serves to entertain or relax (27%), followed by that it helps them learn new things (23%) and to inform themselves (20%).
Regarding the profile of podcast listeners in Spain, as analyzed by Podimo, the podcasting platform, they are men or women between the ages of 25 and 45 who reside in large metropolitan areas. In terms of their listening habits, they usually consume podcasts twice a day, with listening sessions of between 20 and 30 minutes, totaling 15 hours of audio per month. As for the language, it should be emphasized that the majority of podcast listeners in our country prefer to enjoy content in Spanish to the point that less than 15% of listens are in another language.
On the other hand, the pandemic has also led to a smoothing of the saw effect in the hours when podcasts are usually consumed. Thus, Spaniards primarily listen to content during working hours, specifically between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Listenings drop after 8 p.m., a moment when consumers likely devote their time to consuming audiovisual content.
Finally, regarding the theme, the most listened-to podcasts are primarily entertainment ones, followed by suspense or True Crime, personal development, dissemination, and finally romantic themes.
