iHeartMedia and Podimo: an agreement to further amplify the state of Spanish podcasting
Nov 25, 2020
Denmark, Germany, Spain, and now it’s America Latina’s turn: Podimo is already present on the American continent. For this reason, and with the goal of offering the best and most complete content in audio format, we have partnered with the number 1 audio company in the United States and the world's leading podcast producer: iHeartMedia. Through this strategic alliance, we will be able to translate and adapt the most popular podcasts into different languages from around the world and thus reach hundreds of millions of new listeners. This is an agreement that will start with the adaptation into three languages - Spanish, German, and Danish - of one of the most popular current events podcasts in history, "Forgotten: The Women of Juarez" (Olvidadas: Las muertas de Juárez), which revolves around the femicides that occurred in the most dangerous city in Mexico: Ciudad Juárez.
Forgotten: The Women of Juárez, produced by iHeartMedia and Unusual Productions, is one of the most intimate and impactful podcasts in the true crime category of 2020. In the original version of the podcast, Mónica Ortiz Uribe and Oz Woloshyn undertake the task of investigating various hypotheses surrounding the disappearance of hundreds of young women in the border city of Juárez. The bodies of these women have appeared under tragic circumstances, with strange symbols etched on the body and their wrists tied with cords. Is this the work of a serial killer, organ traffickers, or some unknown satanic cult?
Forgotten: The Women of Juárez (whose Spanish title will be Olvidadas: Las muertas de Juárez) will be the first translation and adaptation project between iHeartMedia and Podimo for the Spanish-speaking audience.
With the executive production of iHeartMedia and Unusual Productions, and in collaboration with Podimo, the adapted versions, starting with the mentioned Spanish version, will incorporate both the existing content of the original podcast and new interesting elements, including additional interviews and the participation of the prestigious Mexican journalists Rossana Fuentes Berain and Sandra Romandía.
At the beginning of 2021, the Spanish adaptation series will be launched in 20 countries in Latin America, as well as in Spain and the United States, followed later by the versions in German and Danish. Meanwhile, the original series will remain available on the iHeartRadio app and other podcast platforms.
“This alliance is very powerful. The immense capacity of iHeartMedia to tell stories, combined with Podimo's direct presence in different countries, will be crucial to bringing such important narratives to local audiences. We know that 90% of the content consumed by Podimo's audience is local, so the translation of extraordinary stories will be crucial to multiplying this type of audience,” says Eva Lægdsgaard, Co-founder and Director of Strategic Partnerships at Podimo. “In the podcast business, everything begins and ends with the exceptional telling of a story. However, to ensure that they survive the test of time, it is necessary to significantly increase the audiences for our podcasters and editors, both locally and globally. This will allow them to monetize their content with a much greater reach, and that is the essence of our business model,” she acknowledges.
In the words of Conal Bryne, president of iHeartPodcast Network: “We are excited about this alliance with such an innovative podcast platform as Podimo, as it will allow us to leverage iHeartMedia's unmatched ability to expand the reach of some of our most fascinating local podcasts and make them reach millions of listeners around the world. The podcast market has grown astonishingly as the public seeks better-told stories, so we believe this project with Podimo will help us present our best podcasts to new fans around the globe.”
