The Líbero podcast: a space for football and culture in equal parts with luxury guests
Jun 27, 2021
"I believe that football is a means of communication in itself that allows us to talk about anything in life and to better understand people. That is why I thought I could ask relevant figures, who interest me for their profession, talent, or likability, about the ideal team of their lives. In each interview, the figures choose their players, and I take the opportunity to ask them anecdotes and curiosities related to their responses," so begins Diego Barcala, the director of the magazine Líbero, his explanation of what the Líbero podcast is and what it means. Through this adventure they have embarked on in our application, we can learn another facet and curiosities about some figures from the culture, sports, and communication of our country, such as Guille Galván, Berta Collado, or Julián López.
In the Líbero podcast you will find "a traditional interview but almost like a quiz," acknowledges its director. All characters are asked to choose from the goalkeeper to the last forward and a dessert that consists of quickly answering: president, coach, stadium, anthem, shirt, and bar… This last one, the bar, not everyone will be able to answer due to the pandemic and the fact that watching football in bars is no longer very common. Furthermore, Diego mentions that "the bunch of hooligans that appear in the podcast are watching the match locked up at home to shout in joy".
Thus, while the interviewees share their ideal "11", the listener can see on the go the team of each guest, can compare, and, along the way, develop their own. It is a very childlike and appealing feeling to make lists of the things we like. And football often takes us back to childhood. The good thing about the conversation, Barcala acknowledges, "is that the script is known in advance and those listening have certainty about what’s coming with intact curiosity".
If we ask Diego what the reason is for listening to the Líbero podcast, he is very clear: "No one is obligated… But if you don't listen to it, you will miss out on dozens of anecdotes, curiosities, and stories that will leave you looking fantastic in a gathering of friends." His intention in the interviews is "to uncover constant unheard stories that we love to reproduce out there."
Do you still not know the Líbero Magazine?
Líbero is a football and culture magazine that was born in June 2012. Since then, it has carved its prestige by maintaining football conversations from a higher perspective compared to what we usually read in the sports press. The podcast is the audio reproduction of our interviews that all readers recognize for being filled with anecdotes that help us discover that we are not alone among the football fanatics. Don’t expect to find in Líbero the latest relevant information about the latest youth gem of Turkish football. Nor the latest girlfriend of the current star, unless it’s about the new George Best, then yes, you have us.
About Diego Barcala, the voice of the podcast: he is a journalist, directs and edits the magazine. He does well with interviews, especially if they are with figures he has met on some other adventure. And in 10 years of the magazine, he has had time to experience some iconic comebacks. He acknowledges that he has chosen guests based on his preferences, "which sometimes is a bit old-school, I admit." He has tried to include a bit of everything, musicians, actors, journalists, and also footballers. He admits to being a bit of a novel seeker, but he couldn’t help it. "I was born in ’82, and in the ’90s football was very much a part of my life," he comments.
