This is how podcast listeners are in Spain

Apr 6, 2021

Every time there are more Spaniards who decide to join the podcast and audiobooks fever, an industry that keeps growing worldwide. Thus, currently podcasts generate revenues of 1.3 billion dollars, an amount estimated to multiply by six, reaching 8 billion dollars by 2030. Similarly, the consumption of audiobooks is not lagging behind, and it is estimated that its revenues will quadruple by 2030, increasing from 5 billion to 20 billion dollars.

And the fact is that every day almost 20,000 new podcasts are published worldwide, a number that is increasing month by month to the point that 23% of the podcasts launched this year already have at least 10 episodes. However, not all news is good; practically 1 in 3 podcasts die during their first year of broadcasting, with only one chapter.

“It has been only six months since we launched the Podimo app in Spain, and we are pleasantly surprised by the high level of adoption that paid podcasts are having in our country. As indicated in the infographic, we have a very high level of engagement from podcast listeners, who are dedicating an average of 15 hours a month to listening to podcasts and audiobooks,” declares Javier Celaya, general director of Podimo for Spain and Latin America.

Spaniards fall in love with podcasts

Today, a year after the boom of podcasts that arose from the pandemic and the consequent lockdown, this leisure product has become another alternative for Spaniards to enjoy their free time. And although there are many reasons to enjoy a podcast, when it comes to defining the main one, Spaniards highlight having the option to listen to content whenever they want (30%). In second place is that it serves to entertain or relax (27%), followed by that it helps them learn new things (23%) and to inform themselves (20%).

Regarding the profile of podcast listeners in Spain, as analyzed from Podimo, a podcasting platform, they are men or women between 25 and 45 years old who reside in large metropolises. In terms of listening habits, they usually consume podcasts twice a day, with listening sessions lasting between 20 and 30 minutes, totaling 15 hours of audio per month. Regarding language, it is noteworthy that most podcast listeners in our country prefer to enjoy content in Spanish to the extent that less than 15% of the listens are in another language.

On the other hand, the pandemic has also caused the flattening of the peak effect in the hours they usually consume podcasts. Thus, Spaniards listen to content mainly during working hours, that is, between 8 AM and 6 PM. After 8 PM, listening drops, at which point consumers are likely dedicating their time to consuming audiovisual content.

Finally, regarding the themes, the most listened-to podcasts are primarily those of entertainment, followed by suspense or True Crime, personal development, science communication, and finally romantic themes.
