Cruises into Death

Death on the Cruise Ship
That people die on cruises is not uncommon. In most cases, however, these are due to illness or age-related causes. Sometimes, though, it is a tragic accident, or a person disappears without a trace, as in the case of DSDS star Daniel Küblböck. In the event of a death, there are clear regulations, from the storage of the body on board to the repatriation. But what if a fatal crime occurs on board a ship?
Cruise Without Return
In the international True Crime Podcast “Journey into Death”, Laura Wohlers and Paulina Krasa discuss vacations and trips abroad that ended fatally. And in a particularly tragic way, as these are crimes – even on ships. Whether cruise ship or sailing boat, a murder on the open sea feels particularly suffocating. The vastness of the sea, which represents freedom for some, feels like a deep blue prison that offers no escape. In the cases from “Journey into Death,” it's not only about the crime itself but also the resolution of the case, the competence of the investigators, and bureaucratic obstacles.
Cruise Without Return
The four-member Bradley family is vacationing on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. One evening, the 23-year-old daughter Amy dances until the early hours and doesn't return to the cabin until around 4 a.m. When her father wants to get up in the morning, Amy is no longer there. Kidnapping, human trafficking, and forced prostitution are being considered.
On the High Seas
Robert and Shirley meet and fall in love during high school, lose touch after graduation, and reconnect decades later via the internet. To celebrate Robert's 55th birthday and Shirley's early retirement, a cruise to Mexico is planned. After three days on board, Robert looks too deep into the glass during a shore excursion. Hours later, he is sitting on the deck of the cruise ship smoking a cigarette. His hand is bloodied; it is the end of a great love.
The Mystery of Cabin 9062
Jennifer and George said “I do” and want to spend their honeymoon aboard the “Brilliance of the Seas.” On board, they quickly bond with other travelers, but after an evening in the ship’s casino, the situation escalates: Jennifer and George drink too much and argue. The next morning, Jennifer wakes up alone in her cabin. There is (almost) no trace of her husband.
Blue Water Horror
Heike and Stefan want to leave Germany behind and sail around the world. When they reach the Marquesas in the South Pacific after over three years, they drop anchor in front of the island of Nuku Hiva and go ashore – not knowing that they will soon meet a man who will turn their dream into a nightmare.
The Sea, the Sailing Dream, and the Pirates
For ten years, Malcolm and his wife Lindy sail aboard their sailboat “Mr. Bean” across the map until they eventually end up stranded in Thailand. This was supposed to be the final leg of their grand journey; the two had already booked their return flight tickets back to England. But Malcolm and Lindy will not embark on the journey home together: On the night of March 22-23, 2009, “Mr. Bean” becomes a crime scene.
